Neptune Fountain |
The Neptune Fountain on the Plaza is a favorite. Miller Nichols purchased the 8,000-pound cast lead fountain for its weight in scrap metal. It was found on the top of a train car full of scrap metal by workmen at a salvage company. Installed in the 1950's, the god of the sea moves in his chariot pulled by three mythological sea horses.

Newport Apartment Fountain |
At one time this fountain had been placed in a formal rose garden setting at the old St. Joseph Hospital. It is remarkably similar to the horse-trough fountain that was located at the Kansas end of the Intercity Viaduct. The similarities are so strong as to foster speculation that perhaps this fountain was also a horse trough fountain before being placed in the hospital rose garden. Since its relocation at the Newport Apartment, the owners have added a sculptural embellishment, consisting of a small boy struggling to hold a bird. The water elements of this fountain are no longer intact.

Nichols Restaurant Wall Fountain |
This fountain was commissioned as a duplicate of a fountain in a southern Greek village, which was used for drinking water and washing. The result is a novel fountain for Kansas City, incorporated traditional metal lions heads with mouths spouting water and a variety of stones that could serve as a geology lesson.

Northeast Concourse Fountain |
This year-round fountain was originally known as the Northeast Concourse Casting Pool. Originally it was used for the organized sport of miniature yacht racing. In the 1940's it was popular among fisherman who could practice their art of casting. Fountain jets were added in the 1960's giving it took on a whole new identity.
